Our 21st Anniversary Trip - 2022

Bobby and I celebrated our 21st year of marriage on September 28th. Because our kids are now old enough to stay home overnight by themselves Bobby booked a weekend away in Edisto Island, South Carolina. My sister and her family introduced us to Edisto as that is where they have vacationed as a family for years. We love how quiet Edisto is. Even in the peak summer months you can always find a place to park (which is not the case with a lot of other beachside towns on the Atlantic coast) and the island does not offer any fluff that other beach towns do (which is another reason it is generally a more quiet area).

We arrived in town on a Friday evening and stayed until Sunday around lunch time. On Friday, one of our first stops upon getting into town was the local candy store to stock up on some essential treats for the weekend. We then headed out to dinner at a little restaurant that sits on the ocean. The weather was in the low to mid- 70's all weekend so it was just perfect to sit outside and enjoy our meal. After dinner we checked into our airbnb which was absolutely adorable. We wrapped up our evening with a walk on the beach under the moonlight.

Our second day was spent on the beach - we were either walking on it or sitting on it enjoying the waves. We did end up swimming too because the weather and water temperatures were warm enough to allow us to do so. It's a pretty cool thing to live within driving distance to an ocean and to be able to utilize it in October (which was when we ended up taking this trip).  We grabbed a bite to eat at a delicious Mexican restaurant and decided that we would eat every meal there possible as it was so, so good.

Finally, on Sunday, Bobby and I visited this area of the coast that, for lack of a better description, was like a dead forest in the ocean. The shoreline had both standing and fallen tree trunks spread out over a good 1/2 - 3/4 mile stretch of beach. It was so cool. I have never seen anything like it.

It was super nice to get away with just Bobby. We are looking forward to the days when get-away weekends can be a regular occurrence - which we aren't too far removed from.

A selfie of dad and I at our dinner table the first night we got to Edisto. We ate at the same restaurant that we ate at when we met Janeanne and her family, but we sat outside on the restaurants deck overlooking the ocean on almost every side of us.

A picture of dad with his sunglasses on smiling at the camera at the picnic table of the restaurant we ate at on that first night. The ocean is behind him.

A view of the ocean from our picnic table after the sun had set. The sky is a twilight in color with a pinkish purplish hue along the horizon.

A view of the ocean at twilight on the right of our table at the restaurant we ate at on that first night.

A view of the porch at the house we rented. The porch is painted light gray. It has two outdoor armchairs and a loveseat all with cushions. There is an outdoor coffee table in front of the loveseat with an outdoor umbrella that is currently closed. The umbrella is gray in color as are the cushions. The furniture is made of wicker material and is a brownish gray. There is an outdoor area rug which is also gray and has seashell designs on it.

Another photo of the place we stayed at. This picture shows the queen size bed with an ocean themed light blue and white bed spread with a nightstand. On top of the night stand is a beach themed lamp. The picture also shows the black and white granite counterop of the island in the kitchen. the ceiling is painted a gray blue with white beams running in a perpendicular and parallel pattern. There is a silver fish accent piece hanging above the bed. There is also a window to the right of the nightstand.

A view of the room from the entry way. The place we stayed at was a studio so with the exception of the bathroom everything was in one room. There is an end table up against the wall on the left hand side of the room with a beach themed lamp on it. To the right is the kitchen and the bed in from of that. There are a window and sliding glass doors leading out to the wooden deck straight ahead.

Dad laying on the bed while I snapped another picture of the room. Across from the bed are two gray sitting chairs, a tv stand with a tv on top, and underneath the bed is an area rug.

The bathroom is gray/light blueish and white. To the left of the door is a white vanity with mirror. The countertop is sand colored. Also on the left hand side of the bathroom beside the sink is the toilet with a white shelving unit handing on the wall above the toilet. white towels are kept on the shelves. on the right side of the bathroom is the shower with a beach themed shower curtain.

A view of the room. Kitchen is on the right, bed is in front of that, two chairs and a tv stand are to the left of the bed.

Picture of the ceiling which is made of wood, painted a blueish gray with white beams making a large square shaped design. There is a ceiling fan above the bed.

A view of the marsh that seperates the ocean from the land. The sky is blue with light white clouds streaking the sky. The march grass is green and wheat colored between knee and hip high. The tide is high so there is a lot of water in the channel seperating the land and the ocean.

A picture of the end of our beach walk one morning that ended up at the marsh. the tide is going out, but the water level is still pretty high. there is wet sand on the left side of the picture with the channel filled with water to the right of that. Finally, all the way on the right hand side of the photo are houses.

Dad and I taking a selfie in a marshy part of the beach where a river meets the ocean.

A view of the beach at low tide.

The first sand dollar I found. It was almost a complete shell with only a tiny piece missing on the top of the shell. It has 5 slits in it on the outer part of the circle that makes up the shell. I am holding the shell. Below my hand is very wet sand.

Dad took a picture of me after I found my first conch shell. The tide is going out and is pretty low. The sky is blue and the beach is deserted behind me. I have my head up in a bun with a hot pink tank top on and khaki shorts. I am wearing my sunglasses and am smiling with the conch shell displayed on my open left hand palm.

A selfie of me and Dad on another beach walk. It is before noon as the sun is still between the eastern horizon and the middle of the sky. The open ocean is behind us. I am wearing a pink and white striped t-shirt and sunglasses. My hair is straightened and is falling over my shoulders. Dad is in a black brewery tshirt (i do not know which one) and is wearing his sunglasses. We are both smiling for the camera.

The open ocean with not a human or boat in sight. The ocean extends to the horizon with its dark blue waters. There are white bubbles in the forefront of the photo where the waves are meeting the beach. the water is so calm the ocean almost looks like a lake.

Dad sitting on the beach enjoying the sound of the waves. Only his feet are in the photo. His left leg is crossed over his right one. He is sitting with his legs outstretched. In front of him is sandy beach and open ocean. The ocean is calm and the sky is a clear blue with cirrus clouds scattered here and there.

Another view of the same photo as above. This one is taken from a bit closer in giving you a clear picture of just how calm the ocean is. Again, it looks like a pond or lake instead of the ocean. The waves are nonexistant.

Our first night walk. The moon was on full display, but there were clouds moving in to cover it up. The moon was still able to illuminate both the ocean and the beach making it seem like there was a light on.

The first creature we found on our night walk - a crab. He was about the side of your palm. He was a brownish/gray color with two beady black eyes sticking out of his head. He was making his way from the waves to his hiding spot on the shore.

What we originally thought was one horseshoe crab, but was really two. This picture only shows one of the crabs as the other one is still buried in the sand. The one in the phone is the brownish/beige color that all horseshoe crabs are. He was spotted right where the waves were hitting the sand. So he was in enough water that covered a portion of him, but not all of him. The tide had just turned.

A true starfish. This was so cool to find. The starfish is a blackish color with whiteish/gold (it was hard to tell which because he was wet) dots all over his skin. He was left behind by the tide that was going out and was left in the still wet sand.

The final picture from our night walk. This one is of a large piece of drift wood that had been buried in the sand straight up and down. Over time, people had placed various shells on its branches.

A selfie of dad and I eating lunch at Tortugas - a mexican restaurant. We are sitting outside on a picnic table. Dad and I are both sitting on the same side of the table. Dad is wearing his salty dog cafe black tshirt and I am in a pink and white striped t-shirt. We came here after our morning walk.

Sunset on our second night in town. We are walking up to the beach after finding a parking spot. In the center of this picture is a huge palmetto tree (i believe). in the background is the trail that leads to the beach. The sky is a reddish orange hue towards the horizon with the rest of the sky a blueish black - twilight. The ocean is also visiible, but only slightly as the tree and the beach grass in front of the tree take up most of the picture. Because it is getting dark the tree looks black in the photo.

Me walking on the beach path to the beach. I am a black silhouette because of the time of day it is. Because of am walking toward the beach the photo captures me from behind. There is beach grass to the left and right of me with the darkened sky above. There is still an orangeish hue on the horizon from where the sun had just set. The ocean is before me.

Another twilight picture. This one is of the beach grass, ocean, and night sky. The horizon looks like it is on fire. The reddish orange is so bright.

A view of the ocean at high tide with the sun having just set. The sky is a twilight color with the horizon being a pinkish orange.

Me holding a conch shell that I found on the beach. This part of the beach was in an area that does not allow you to collect shells. This shell was too big to try and sneak it into my clothes.

A rotted tree that has fallen into the ocean. This part of the ocean is covered with fallen trees that have rotted out. At one point this must have been a living forest, but has since died out leaving a mini-forest of dead and fallen trees behind.

Walking through the fallen trees at the tide line.

A dry piece of a large tree laying on its side. At one time it had countless branches that are now stubs just sticking out of the trunk in a ton of different directions. On top of some of the branches are conch shells placed there by people passing by.

A selfie of dad on the forest beach in front of a tangle of branches.

Two fallen trees with their root balls up in the air facing each other as the tide is pushing out. The water is ankle deep and there are sprays of white bubbles everywhere.

Me on the forested beach. My hair is pulled up in a bun with my khaki pants rolled up to my knees, a beige sweater and a mint green shirt are what I am wearing. I have my sunglasses on and have a large conch shell in my hand. I have just picked it up from the wet sand.

The photo looks out through a dense thicket of fallen trees. The tide is right at the edge of this fallen forest. All of the trees have been in the water long enough that they are smooth like driftwood. The tide is heading out but is currently right where these fallen trees meet. The fallen trees and their branches are tangled creating a web of wet wood.

Me holding a beige color conch shell the size of both of my palms. The photo shows my hand holding the shell and the remnants of a wave that has just crested on the beach and is moving back out towards the ocean.

A large leaveless tree has fallen into the ocean. The trees biggest branches make a 'y' shape and are laying on the left side of the picture towards the ocean. The sky is a brilliant blue with puffy white clouds dotting the area. The waves are crashing into the tree. Around the fallen tree are a dozen or so trees that are all dead, but have not yet fallen. They look haunted in the water.

On the way back to the car we passed over a wooden bridge on the trail where I saw a HUGE spider that would rival the ones at the house. This is a picture of that spider.
